First-Time Buyers
No credit history? Here is how NZ vehicle finance actually works.
First time borrowing, new to New Zealand, or no credit cards? A thin file is not a no. Here is what NZ specialist lenders look at instead.
If you have never had a credit card, never financed anything, or you are new to New Zealand, your credit file is what lenders call “thin.” It is not negative, it is just empty. The mainstream bank scorecards do not love empty files, because they have nothing to score you on.
Specialist NZ lenders look at this differently. Here is what they actually want to see, and how to get a yes the first time.
What “no credit history” usually looks like
We see thin files most often in three groups:
- First-time borrowers, usually under 25, who have always paid for things in cash or by debit card and have never opened a credit account
- Recent migrants to New Zealand with strong credit histories overseas that simply do not transfer to NZ credit bureaus
- Anyone returning to the system after years of using only debit and savings, where any older finance history has aged off the file
In all three cases, the bank’s automated scorecard sees a missing data point and downgrades the application. It is not a judgement on you. It is just the model running out of input.
What specialist lenders actually look at
When credit history is thin, the lender shifts attention to other signals. The questions get more practical:
Is the income real and stable?
Two years in the same job (or two years of consistent self-employed income) does most of the heavy lifting. The lender wants to see the income arrive in your bank account on a predictable rhythm.
What does your bank statement say?
Six months of personal bank statements paint the picture the credit file cannot. Lenders read for consistent income, normal expenses, and no overdraft hits or dishonoured payments. A clean transaction history is often more compelling than a credit score.
Are there any other repayment records?
Even without finance, you have probably been paying things. Rent, power, telco contracts, AfterPay or Laybuy. A landlord reference confirming twelve months of on-time rent is a meaningful signal to a specialist lender.
Is there a deposit?
Skin in the game changes the lender’s risk. A 10 to 20 percent deposit on a thin-file application often turns a maybe into a yes. If you do not have a deposit, that is workable too, but expect tighter terms.
What to bring to the application
For a thin-file application, having these ready makes the lender’s life easier:
- Proof of income for the last three months: payslips for PAYE, or bank statements showing self-employed income
- Six months of personal bank statements downloaded straight from your internet banking
- Photo ID (driver licence is ideal) and a utility bill or bank statement under three months old confirming your address
- Any overseas credit history if you are a recent migrant. Some lenders will give weight to a clean credit report from your home country if it can be verified
- A landlord reference if you have been renting for more than a year
The more of those you have ready, the faster the application moves.
What to avoid
Two things will hurt a thin-file application more than they hurt anyone else:
- Multiple credit applications close together. Every enquiry is recorded for two years, and four or more in 90 days reads as desperation. Apply once, in the right place.
- Applying just before payday with an overdrawn account showing on your statements. Wait a week, get the account back into the black, then apply.
